A man has appeared in court charged with having a ‘large hatchet’ as an offensive weapon in a public place in Ballymena.

Ciaran McGill (32), of Fisherwick Crescent in the town, is alleged to have committed the offence at Fisherwick Gardens on December 2 this year.

He is also charged with assaulting two people and damaging a car belonging to one of them on the same date.

The defendant appeared in the dock at Ballymena Magistrates Court on Thursday December 27 where a police officer said he believed he could connect him to the charges.

A prosecution lawyer said the case papers were not available to be served on the defendant and asked for the case to be adjourned for three weeks.

The defendant was released on £500 bail with a condition barring him from entering Fisherwick Gardens and he is not to contact three individuals, including the two alleged victims, directly or through social media.

The case was adjourned to January 17.
