A man from the Armoy area caught doing 100mph said he was in a rush home after being told a family member was unwell and had been hospitalised.

Eamon Cassley (21), of Coolkeeran Road, admitted breaching the 70mph speed limit at the Frosses Road in November last year.

Defence barrister Alan Stewart told Ballymena Magistrates Court, the defendant had received a phone call about the family member being unwell but it later emerged the person did not have to go to hospital.

The defendant was banned from driving for a month and fined £300.

District Judge Nigel Broderick said the starting point for him for anyone caught doing 100mph or more was normally a three months ban because “time and time again we are told speed is a major cause of accidents”.

However, limiting the defendant’s ban to a month he said he took into account that Cassley was employed as a lorry driver.
