A Coleraine man who punched and kicked his partner claimed he did it because he was “sick” of her kicking him.

Gary Moore (30), of Greenmount Avenue, appeared at Coleraine Magistrates Court on February 4 from Maghaberry Prison where he had been on remand.

He pleaded guilty to a charge of assault relating to October last year.

The court heard an eye-witness said that at around 3-4am they saw a woman on the ground and Moore was kicking and punching her.

The injured party did not make a complaint.

She was present in court and a defence solicitor said both Moore and the injured party wished their relationship to continue.

In another incident, Moore was disorderly in Coleraine town centre on December 16 last year.

He was shouting and swearing at police.

Deputy District Judge Peter Magill said the incidents were “thoroughly unacceptable” and said Moore had a bad record which included violence against another female.

The judge said he had to decide how to protect Moore’s current partner and other women.

He noted the defendant had served the equivalent of six weeks in prison.

The judge put the defendant on Probation for 18 months and he is not to enter any relationship without notifying his supervising officer.

That way, Judge Magill said, any other woman would be aware of Moore’s background.
