An 18-year-old was rushing around with a Samurai Sword at his home near Ballymena on Boxing Day, the town’s Magistrates Court heard.

Stephen Williams, of Ballylesson Road, has pleaded guilty to possessing an offensive weapon with intent to commit an assault and he also admitted possessing cannabis on December 26 last year.

A prosecutor said police received a report of a domestic incident in which the defendant was “running about” the house with a Samurai Sword and making threats.

His mother believed he was “under the influence of something,” the court heard and when he was arrested drugs were found.

Defence solicitor Stewart Ballentine said the defendant had spent a number of weeks in custody on remand but is now back home with his mother.

He is now getting help with issues, the court heard.

The lawyer claimed the Boxing Day incident arose “because of this young man’s difficulty to come to terms with” a new relationship a family member had.

The solicitor said the weapon was an ornamental sword which had been hanging on a wall.

District Judge Nigel Broderick said it was an “unhappy episode”.

He told Williams that as he had spent time behind bars he had paid his “debt to society”.

The judge put the defendant on Probation for a year in an attempt to minimise the risk of further offending.

At Ballymena Court last autumn, Williams had been given a caution after charges of possessing an offensive weapon – a baton – and having cannabis – at Ballymena War Memorial across the road from the town’s Police Station – were withdrawn for a police caution.
