A 17-year-old boy has pleaded guilty to assaulting a schoolboy and possessing a hammer as an offensive weapon at Ballymena Bus & Rail Centre.

The youth had originally been charged with attempted grievous bodily harm with intent but at Ballymena Courthouse that charge was withdrawn by prosecutors.

A Youth Conference Plan regarding the youth has been requested by mid-April.

Last year two other youths pleaded guilty to assaulting the same schoolboy, believed to have been 13, in the area of Ballymena Bus & Rail Centre.

The incident happened last April.

In December a 16-year-old boy pleaded guilty to a charge of assaulting the boy and a second charge of having blades from a Stanley Knife in a public place.

A third youth – a 15-year-old boy – pleaded guilty to assaulting the schoolboy.

The defendants cannot be named because of their ages.

Last April police said a boy needed hospital treatment after suffering facial injuries after allegedly being struck with a hammer.

At the time a local councillor alleged other schoolchildren filmed the incident on mobile phones.
