After being seen cutting off a security tag at the TK Maxx store in Ballymena a description was circulated and a man was then located walking out of Sports Direct in the Fairhill Centre.

Keith Balmer (26), was found to be in possession of a pocket knife on January 16 this year.

At Ballymena Magistrates Court on March 14 he was sentenced on charges of criminal damage to a security tag and having a pocket knife for use in theft.

Defence barrister Stephen Law said the defendant had been living a “pillar to post existence under the influence of alcohol and a cocktail of illicit substances” but appeared to have had a U-turn and obtained his own accommodation which he decorated himself.

The defendant was given a two months jail term, suspended for one year.
