Ballymena Court hears man allegedly threatened to ‘blind’ a person

A MAN who allegedly threatened to “blind” a person has been given a suspended jail term at Ballymena Magistrates Court.

Ryan Mitchell (28), of Drumtara, Ballymena, appeared at the town’s Magistrates Court on Thursday where he was present, via video link, for sentencing on a criminal damage charge.

Police were tasked to an address in Ballymena around 10pm on May 7 this year and found broken glass panes at a front door at a property.

Two men – a father and son – at the property said Mitchell had broken the glass.

A prosecutor said one of the men was distressed and visibly shaken and he said Mitchell had knocked on the door and when his son opened it had wanted to come in but when he was told he couldn’t enter the defendant tried to push the door open.

The son managed to close the door and lock it but Mitchell then began to bang on the door with what was believed to be a vodka bottle and the glass in the door was broken and the bottle fell into the hallway.

Mitchell was looking through the windows and allegedly shouting: “You’re blind in one eye and I’ll take your other eye” before standing in the hallway.

Mitchell then walked downstairs and out a communal door and while walking off it was claimed that he shouted: “I’m going to permanently blind you, you b*stard” and the householders took the threats seriously.

The court heard the defendant, who had 22 previous convictions, had already paid £90 for the damage to the door.

Defence solicitor Stewart Ballentine said the defendant had been out of trouble for the last five years.

Mitchell was given a four months jail term, suspended for a year.
