IT is getting more expensive to die as Mid & East Antrim Borough Council introduces an inflation-busting rise in burial charges.
Burial charges will rise from £300 to £314 in October, a spokeperson told ‘Ballymena Daily’.
The spokesperson confirmed the rise is 4.5 percent.
That is well above the current rate of inflation which is currently around the two percent mark.
The spokesperson confirmed the increase is aimed at allowing a “sustainable service” as “MEABC cemeteries currently operate at a £400k annual loss”.
The Council spokesperson added: “With the rise, Mid and East Antrim is still significantly lower than other council areas”.
Meanwhile, a ‘minute’ from a Council meeting shows that the Council agreed that their cemetery pricing policy be amended and costs increased at approximately 4.5 per cent ‘every year for three years and that an annual increase be made in line with inflation and associated charges every year thereafter’.
