Councillor quits Mid & East Antrim Borough Council ahead of expected court appearance

Mark McKinty

An Ulster Unionist Party councillor has quit his role on Mid & East Antrim Borough Council ahead of an expected court appearance.

Mark McKinty from Magheramorne had represented the Larne Lough electoral area.

It’s understood he is expected to appear in court on Thursday on a drink driving charge.

An Ulster Unionist Party statement said the councillor had contacted party leader Robin Swann and tendered his resignation.

The party spokesperson said a process will now start to fill the position being vacated by Mr McKinty on Mid and East Antrim Borough Borough Council.

It is expected that the party will be able to co-opt a replacement and there will be no need for a by-election.

A Council spokesman told ‘Ballymena Daily’: “We can confirm we have been notified that Councillor Mark McKinty is to resign his position on Mid and East Antrim Borough Council.”
