COVID ‘HOTSPOT’: Third of all new Covid cases in Northern Ireland are in Mid & East Antrim

A THIRD of all new Covid cases reported in Northern Ireland in the last day were in Mid & East Antrim.

There were 27 new cases reported including nine in the local council district.

Mid & East Antrim has had the highest number of new cases in Northern Ireland in the last two weeks with 97 which is even ahead of Belfast which had 92 new cases.

In the last week there have been 74 new cases in Mid & East Antrim with Belfast having 60.

There have been 516 cases in Mid & East Antrim out of 12,279 people tested in the area since the pandemic started.

There have been 520 cases in Antrim & Newtownabbey and 356 in Causeway Coast & Glens.

Although Mid & East Antrim has been a ‘hotspot’ for new cases in recent weeks, the area’s overall number of cases is still below Belfast with 1,520; Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon (776); Lisburn and Castlereagh (559) and Antrim & Newtownabbey.

The total number of cases in Northern Ireland since the pandemic began is 6,391.

The number of people who have died across Northern Ireland since the pandemic began, according to the Department of Health, is 558.

In Mid & East Antrim, since the pandemic started, the number of people who died is 44 according to Department of Health statistics.

The Health Department says there have been 60 deaths in Antrim and Newtownabbey and 39 in Causeway Coast and Glens.
