Eight months jail sentence for woman who stole more than £1,600 worth of goods in series of shoplifting incidents in Ballymena

The defendant took a number of items from Sainsbury's in Ballymena

A WOMAN who stole more than £1,600 worth of goods including ten bottles of Zoflora disinfectant in a series of shoplifting raids has been given an eight months jail term at Ballymena Magistrates Court.

Louise Browne (31), of High Street in Ballymena, was in court for sentencing for seven charges of theft and one charge of possessing the drug Mirtazapine.

On May 9 this year she stole a bottle of Fabulosa disinfectant and ten bottles of Zoflora disinfectant worth £30 from Poundstretcher in Ballymena.

On two dates in July she took items worth £590 and £774 from Sainsbury’s in Ballymena. CCTV showed her placing electrical items in a trolley and leaving without making payment.

Later in July she stole a bottle of Jawbox Gin worth £25 from Robinson’s Supermarket in the town.

Eleven Mirtazapine tablets were located at her home address and she initially told police they weren’t hers.

In September this year the defendant stole £15 worth of goods from Poundland in the Tower Centre; packets of boxer shorts worth £45 from TK Maxx and five bottles of vodka and three bottles of rum worth £160 from Tesco.

A defence barrister said the defendant, who is pregnant, was “vulnerable” and had “addiction issues” but had detoxed from heroin and had been engaging with Community Addictions.

District Judge Nigel Broderick said last year the defendant had been given a suspended jail sentence for a domestic burglary and the new matters had involved “persistent” thefts of high value items and jailed her for eight months.

Bail in the sum of £500 was fixed for appeal.
