THE first of a number of new vehicle test centres in Northern Ireland will be built at Ballee in Ballymena, we can reveal.

A spokesperson for Mid & East Antrim Borough Council confirmed to ‘Ballymena Daily’ they have sold a 4.3 acre site at Ballee to the Driver & Vehicle Agency.

The Council also confirmed the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service has “indicated an interest” in land at Ballee.

The Council said “remaining lands are subject to an ongoing assessment”.

The Council statement added: “The Driver Vehicle Agency’s Ballymena Test Centre is currently located in the Pennybridge Industrial Estate.

“Due to increasing demand for its services and changing legislative requirements, the current test centre and site are no longer able to meet its needs.

“As such Driver Vehicle Agency is seeking to procure a new site within the Ballymena area from which to deliver all its services. Ballymena will be the first new test centre in Northern Ireland.”

A Department for Infrastructure spokesperson told ‘Ballymena Daily’: “The Department is currently considering options regarding the test centre network and, with the exception of a new test centre being built at Hydebank in Belfast, no decisions have yet been taken.” Story: Nevin Farrell
