A GoFundMe page set up by a friend of the family of Brooke Reid – the 12-year-old Ballymena girl who tragically died in a house fire in the town on Wednesday evening – had by 8pm on Saturday raised almost £8,000.
A funeral service for Brooke, who was a pupil at Dunclug College, will be held in Ballymena on Sunday afternoon.
Dawn Walker – a friend of Brooke’s mum Martha McMaster – set up the ‘Brooke Reid McMaster Fund’ and had an initial target of £1,000 but public support has far exceeded that with £7,971 raised by around 8pm on Saturday.
When she set up the GoFundMe page on Wednesday, Dawn had written: “Brooke Reid, 12 years old, such a beautiful young lady
“Brooke sadly, tonight, lost her life in an extremely tragic event in Ballymena, Northern Ireland.
“I am a mum of three and came to know Martha when she became part of my team, part of a sisterhood of woman nationwide known as Team Sass.
“It’s no secret that this family have gone through so much and no parent this young should be losing another one of their beautiful babies
“I beg you all to dig deep and help raise some pennies so we can support Brooke’s family in these hard times. Funeral costs and then some to ensure they can grieve in peace and have no further concerns at this time.
“The family have lost not only this gorgeous little lady but their home, belongings, and of course memories of young Brooke too. RIP sweet little lady Shine Bright. Thinking of the McMaster family ♥️,” Dawn said.
In an update on the GoFundMe page on Thursday, Dawn said: “Just a quick update to say a massive thank you to everyone for being so kind and generous.
“These donations, by no means, can turn back the clock but will go a long way in helping the family in rebuilding their home and lives without this gorgeous little angel. Please keep sharing far and wide – this family deserve the world.
“Totally overwhelmed by all the donations for Brooke’s family. In just 9 small hours it went over the £1K target mark and it’s still climbing…… just wow x
“Thank you to everyone who has already donated and shared the page, keep sharing, keep helping! Shine bright little Brooke”.
