GRAFFITI saying the word ‘F*nian’ has been daubed on a street nameplate for the village of Rasharkin.

The word was written in black across the sign and obscures the word ‘Rasharkin’.

The sign is one of the old nameplates put up several years ago by the then Ballymoney Borough Borough Council which is now Causeway Coast & Glens Borough Council.

This is the first impression people get of Rasharkin when approaching along the Duneany Road.

It is unknown how long the graffiti has been on the sign at Duneany Road but it was there in recent days.

There have been several graffiti attacks in the Rasharkin area over the years including on the Orange Hall in the village and the village GAA club.

In a statement to ‘Ballymena Daily’ following the street sign incident, Sinn Fein councillor Leanne Peacock, said: “Sectarian hate crimes of this sort are unfortunately a frequent occurrence for us in Rasharkin and not only serve to cause offence to many people in our area and passing through but make our entire area appear run down and undesirable.

“I do believe that some of this has been there for some time.

“This type of antisocial behaviour which amounts to nothing more than criminal damage is senseless and utterly despicable. There is no place in society for this type of behaviour.

“We are proud of our wee village and the beautiful surroundings that we are fortunate enough to reside in and those who commit such acts serve no interest other than their own narrow-minded sectarian hatred.

“We are in the middle of a global pandemic where people should be coming together, not driven apart.

“I have asked Council to remove this disgusting graffiti at the earliest opportunity”.

A spokesperson for Causeway Coast & Glens Borough Council told ‘Ballymena Daily’: “Council is currently investigating this report of graffiti in Rasharkin.”
