The new Mid and East Antrim councillor for the Larne Lough electoral area has been announced as Keith Turner.
Speaking about the new appointment Councillor Turner said he was ‘delighted’ to be in the new role.
Cllr Turner added: “My priorities are to consult with residents and support local shops and businesses.
“Protecting resources locally as well as developing and promoting local jobs is very important and I plan to keep that at the top of my agenda.
“As I am now retired I will be dedicating all my time to my role as a councillor.”
Councillor Turner played rugby and cricket at a professional level. He is also a keen environmentalist.
He is from the Kells area.
He was selected by the Ulster Unionist Party as a replacement for Mark McKinty who resigned from the council after recently appearing at court for a second drink driving offence.
Councillor Turner told the ‘Ballymena Guardian’ he would work for everyone.
He said: “I received word last week that I’d been appointed to Council. I would have liked it to be under different circumstances but I’ll work tirelessly along with other UUP elected representatives for everyone regardless of political persuasion, creed, colour, faith or gender to make where we live the best place possible.”
