THERE may have been much criticism aimed at Mid & East Antrim Borough Council in recent years regarding the condition of the main pitch at the Showgrounds so when you get praise you could be forgiven for being over the moon.
The Council had come under fire over the condition of the re-laid Ballymena Showgrounds pitch during the winter but improvement work was then carried out to much acclaim.
Mayor Maureen Morrow told a council meeting in Ballymena this week there were many positive comments regarding the recent SuperCup NI youth tournament.
She said it had been a marvellous event and said the Council received much praise regarding the standard of pitches in the Mid & East Antrim area.
The Mayor told councillors: “Compared to the ones in the Causeway – they preferred ours”.
She added: “It has been a great success and we look forward to hosting it next year and hopefully with more matches in our area”.
Ballymena DUP councillor John Carson said he was also asked to pass on “compliments” regarding the Ballymena Showgrounds.
He added: “After the negativity that there was and the ridicule that we had taken – to see it in the shape it was in was really a credit.”
Alderman Stewart McDonald (TUV) said it was great to see Ahoghill involved as a SuperCup venue this year.
* Regarding the Ballymena Showgrounds pitch, two matches have been played on the pitch inside 24 hours with Northern Ireland Under-21s playing Malta on Friday night and Ballymena United were in action against Warrenpoint at 3pm on Saturday.
