THE Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Peter Johnston, today praised the work of carers across the borough, whose important contribution to society as well as loved ones often goes unnoticed.
Carers Week 2020 runs from 8 June to 14 June.
New figures released for Carers Week show an estimated 4.5 million people in the UK have become unpaid carers as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
This is on top of the 9.1 million unpaid carers who were already caring before the outbreak, bringing the total to 13.6 million.
The Mayor said: “Our carers are selfless, determined and resilient. But this can be at the expense of the carers’ own aspirations, well-being and quality of life as they support their family, friends and neighbours for nothing in return.
“In these challenging times we must all ensure that they are neither taken for granted nor forgotten.
“I would like to commend all the carers out there and to the unsung heroes for the amazing work they do every day of the year.”
