A NEW vehicle test centre is set to be built at Ballee Playing Fields in Ballymena, it has emerged.

A report tabled for a committee meeting of Mid & East Antrim Borough Council in Ballymena tonight (Monday) reveals: ‘In January Council agreed to sell a section of the land at Ballee to the DVA (Driver & Vehicle Agency) for a new Vehicle Testing Centre’.

There is currently a test centre at Pennybridge Industrial Estate in Ballymena.

The sale of the land at Ballee was previously discussed at a behind-closed-doors section of a council committee meeting and this is the first time news of the new Vehicle Test Centre has publicly emerged.

When the sale of a section of the land at Ballee had been proposed it led to speculation about the locations of the ‘Twelfth Field’ in Ballymena as several July 12 parades have gone to Ballee.

However, it looks as if Ballee will again be the ‘Twelfth Field’ next year.

The report before councillors tonight says: ‘Ballee Playing Fields has traditionally been used for a range of events, including the 12th July celebrations. When agreeing the sale to DVA, Council agreed that the remaining space should remain available for events.

‘The arrangements for this sale are progressing, however, have experienced a slight delay due to covid-19 pandemic’

The report was tabled for councillors after a request to use Ballee Playing Fields on July 12 next year came in from Kellswater LOL 453 to use the venue for the 2020 ‘demonstration field’.

The report continued: ‘On review of the area available at the Ballee Playing Fields following the sale to DVA, there would be adequate space to accommodate the 12th event in the remainder of the site’.
