DUP North Antrim MLA and Policing Board representative Mervyn Storey has welcomed the arrest of nine people under the Terrorism Act as part of a cross-border policing operation targeting the New IRA.
Commenting, Mr Storey said: ‘‘As Northern Ireland continues to grapple with unprecedented challenges posed by Covid-19 it is important to recognise that the deadly threat posed by dissident republicans has not gone away.
“The PSNI’s confirmation that nine people are being questioned under terrorism legislation in relation to the activity of the New IRA is therefore extremely welcome.
“It is our hope that moving forward this will result in prosecutions and convictions with the ultimate reward of keeping dangerous terrorist off our streets and behind bars.”
A number of searches also took place in the Republic of Ireland.
Mr Storey added: “This outcome demonstrates the continuing merit of close and active cooperation between agencies in our separate jurisdictions. I would like to commend all officers involved in Tuesday’s operation for their efforts.’’
