Pandemic means Professor Brian Cox ‘Science School’ in Ballymena is postponed to next year

The 'Science School' at The Braid Town Hall has been postponed to next year.

A ‘SCIENCE School’ due to be held in Ballymena this month by world-renowned physicist Professor Brian Cox – of TV documentary ‘The Planets’ fame – has been postponed until next summer.

A report prepared ahead of a Mid & East Antrim Borough Council committee meeting on Monday night said the Science School aims to inspire young people to become the next generation of scientists.

The report adds: ‘Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and ongoing restrictions the physical Science Summer School event planned for 24 November 2020 has been moved to 22 June, 21’.

The event is due to be held in The Braid Town Hall and hundreds of local students are due to attend.

As well as Professor Cox there will be lectures provided by speakers from renowned universities and industry and workshops incorporating local businesses, universities and schools.

The Council report continues: ‘The main event on 22 June 2021 will be followed by a family event in the evening, also to take place in The Braid.

‘Pupils will bring a parent/guardian to attend an evening reception hosted by Professor Cox who will interview some of the speakers and businesses from the event.’

The Council report says the Council has already agreed an allocation of £20,000 towards the events and sponsorship is being sought ‘however, given the economic challenges arising from Covid-19 there remains a risk that sponsorship may not be forthcoming’.

Alderman Gerardine Mulvenna said it was an “inspirational” event.
