POLICE followed footsteps in snow to find an over-the-limit man in a field near a crashed vehicle at Monument Road at Knockagh near Carrickfergus.

Jonathan Dempsey (34), of Faunoran Park, Greenisland, appeared at Ballymena Magistrates Court via video link from his solicitor’s office and pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol in breath in relation to April 6 this year.

A prosecutor said: “Due to the weather conditions the defendant’s footprints were clearly visible in snow”.

The defendant had a reading of 89 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath – the legal limit is 35.

A defence solicitor said the defendant had earlier been drinking at home and “took off” but “doesn’t have a great recollection but is willing to hold his hands up”.

The defendant was banned from driving for 16 months and fined £250.
