A short distance away another area was sealed off.

At one stage police used a drone.

Shocked locals looked on as investigators continued their work.

Ballymena councillor Rodney Quigley (Independent) said on social media: “Waking up this morning to the sad news of another young Ballykeel man’s life taken too soon.”

He expressed his deepest sympathy to the man’s family circle and added: “My thoughts and prayers are with you all.”

In a statement, Alliance Ballymena councillor Patricia O’Lynn said: “My thoughts are with the victim and his loved ones. I offer my deepest sympathies to them.

“The local community in Ballykeel, as well as wider across Ballymena, will be in shock hearing this tragic news.

“I urge anyone with information on this shocking incident to contact police with it immediately.”

Ballykeel Loyal Sons of Ulster Band said on social media the deceased man was a popular figure in the estate.

They added that he “was someone many people had a lot of time for. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, his friends and his 2 little boys who have now been left without a Daddy. Ballykeel will always remember.”
