The Police Antrim & Newtownabbey Facebook page said: ‘Sadly we had a call to report damage to a number of trees in the Randalstown area. This damage was maliciously caused.’

They posted a picture of a damaged tree and said: ‘This particular tree was planted at a cost of £250.’

The police added: ‘Some may say “it’s just a tree”. However we understand the time and effort our friends in Tidy Randalstown put in when making the area look it’s best. Tidy Randalstown represent the whole community.

‘We hope the community can help us. If you can identify those responsible please contact the Neighbourhood Team in Antrim. #KeepingPeopleSafe’

On Wednesday police gave an update and said they were back out on patrol in Randalstown.

The Facebook post added: ‘We checked in with Tidy Randalstown who were continuing their hard work planting new plants around the viaduct. We also spoke with residents who highlighted some anti social behaviour issues at weekends. Please phone 101 to report any suspicious activity.’
