POLICE used CS spray after officers came under attack from individuals who were part of a crowd of ‘150’ people which had gathered as night spots were closing in Ballymena in the early hours of Sunday.

Trouble flared at Springwell Street around 2am where it is believed revelers – including some early Christmas Party-goers – had left nearby nightspots.

It is understood part of a crowd surrounded six police officers.

A PSNI spokeswoman said: “While police were carrying out an arrest on suspicion of vehicle theft and drink driving in Springwell Street, Ballymena, at around 2am, officers came under attack from a crowd of around 150 people and CS spray was deployed.

“One woman was arrested for assault on police and resisting arrest after striking three officers, punching one in the face.

“The 24-year-old has since been charged with three counts of assault on police and is expected to appear at Coleraine Magistrates Court on December 23.

“As is usual procedure the charges will be reviewed by the PPS (Public Prosecution Service).

“An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of ‘taking and driving away’ and drink driving. He remains in custody at present,” the spokeswoman said on Sunday.
