BALLYMENA town centre has been dealt a retail blow with news that the Barclays Bank branch at Church Street is set to close in May.

The branch had been opening for only three days a week.

Letters detailing the move have been sent to customers.

The news prompted much reaction on social media with many people expressing concern about what type of town centre there will be in the future.

One man said: ‘Fuming this branch closing. Excellent service from the staff in this branch over the past 10 years I been using it’.

Another person said: ‘Sad state of affairs. The banks close branches and force us to use ATMs and then guess what…they will eventually start charging us for using them.’

Another comment was: ‘Soon be nothing but charity shops’.

A woman said: ‘Kinda suspected it would close down when it went to a 3 day a week bank’.

Another comment was: ‘Way they are all going’.

A woman said: “That’s sad. That’s my reaction. I’ve been banking with them 10 years and they’re so helpful, charges are low and advice line is open 24/7 and I banked with a few different places before I settled with this one which I think is the best.”

Another woman said: “Now I’llhave to to Belfast!!!!”
