A 24-year-old sales assistant who has pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol in breath at Antrim Road in Ballymena “burst into tears” when pulled over by police, her solicitor said.
Holly Millar, of Farm Lodge in the town, has been banned from driving for a year and fined.
A prosecutor said police were on patrol at 2am on July 24 this year at Broughshane Street in the town when they saw an Audi which they followed to Antrim Road where they stopped the vehicle.
There was a “very strong” smell of intoxicating liquor from the defendant, who was the driver, and after failing a preliminary breath test she provided an evidential reading of 66 – the legal limit is 35 – at a police station.
A defence solicitor said his client’s parents were “very annoyed and upset” as was the defendant over what happened.
The lawyer said Millar had been visiting a relative and they shared a glass of wine and then had another glass and felt capable of driving but there had been a combination of medication and “not having anything to eat”.
The solicitor said the defendant was apologetic and was “very tearful” during his consultation with her.
