TRIPLE SPORTING BOOST: ‘We’re by Farah and away the best’ says Mayor

READY, STEADY...MO: Mayor Cllr Peter Johnston, Sir Mo Farah, Council Chief Executive Anne Donaghy, and Antrim Coast Half Marathon race organiser James McIlroy, in Larne ahead of the big event.

SPORT-MAD Mid & East Antrim is currently the envy of councils across Northern Ireland having secured a number of high-profile events, Mayor Peter Johnston says.

Recently the Northern Ireland Open golf tournament was held at Galgorm Castle and at the weekend four-time Olympic champion runner Sir Mo Farah  took part in the Antrim Coast Half Marathon.

But the sporting coups don’t stop there – coming up at Galgorm Castle on September 24 is the Irish Open golf tournament.

Speaking at a Council meeting in Ballymena, Mayor Johnston thanked council officers for helping to attract big names and events to the district.

He said the events put the area “on the map” and meant the district had “outshone many other councils”.

Meanwhile, speaking after a photoshoot with Sir Mo, Mayor Johnston added: “It was a great honour to welcome Sir Mo to Mid and East Antrim.

“To have a world champion and sporting hero competing in a local event is a fantastic advertisement for the borough and the Antrim Coast.”
