Former minister in Stormont power-sharing government of 1974 has died

A FORMER minister in the power-sharing Stormont Executive of 1974 has died.

John Baxter represented the Ulster Unionist Party and was the Minister for Information in the government under Brian Faulkner and Gerry Fitt.

Mr Baxter was also well-known and respected in legal circles.

From Ballyhome Road near Portrush, he passed away on March 7.

Born just after the outbreak of World War Two he had been a solicitor in Coleraine and was President of Coleraine Chamber of Commerce.

Mr Baxter was admitted to the Roll of Solicitors on November 4, 1964, and was a principal in the former firm of Wray & Baxter Coleraine which merged in 1999 with Macaulay O’Neill & Martin to become Macaulay Wray.

The Law Society of Northern Ireland extended its deepest condolences to his family, friends and former colleagues.
