EFFORTS are underway in a bid to ensure the skirl of the pipes will be heard once again in Portrush this year.
The annual pipe band championships attract thousands of competitors and visitors to the seaside resort including many from the Ballymena area.
However, the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association Northern Ireland Branch’s (RSPBA NI) website recently said: “Unfortunately, we have not been able to secure a competition in Portrush this year. We hope this competition will be back on the calendar as soon as possible.”
It is understood that negotiations are underway between Causeway Coast & Glens Council and RSPBA NI to ensure the event does go ahead this year.
Portrush Ulster Unionist councillor Norman Hillis said: “Since the news broke last week that Portrush would not host a competition this year I have been working tirelessly with Council and RSPBA NI to try and reach a solution.
“I hope to have more updates regarding this in the coming days. With goodwill from both council and the RSPBA NI hopefully, this very important date in the Portrush calendar can be retrieved”.
