A drunk man who was kicking a door at Gardenmore Place in Larne was then “hostile and aggressive” to police who turned up at the scene before he attempted to kick the PSNI vehicle.
When he was arrested, Richard Alan McFaul (53), of Bryan Street in Larne, then spat inside a police cell van taking him to Antrim Police Station on March 28 this year.
The defendant was at Ballymena Magistrates Court on Thursday for sentencing on charges of disorderly behaviour and criminal damage.
Defence barrister Ben Thompson said the spitting incident had been “deeply unpleasant” and the defendant wished to make a sincere apology.
He said the defendant had now completed a detox programme; was off alcohol and living in a “dry house” with a family member.
The defendant was in breach of suspended sentences and District Judge Peter King said had McFaul not gone through rehab he would have sent him to prison but instead ordered him to do 100 hours of Community Service and he also varied the suspended sentences to run for another two years.
