A Ballymena man who was acting aggressively at Antrim Area Hospital where he was with a relative who had been “seriously assaulted with a hammer” has been given a five months jail term, suspended for three years.

Matthew Joseph Mitchell (30), of Dunvale, began struggling with police and an officer received a cut to his finger as he tried to apply handcuffs to the defendant during the incident on March 27 last year.

Mitchell was restrained on the ground in the reception area which was full of people and he was shouting and swearing at the “top of his voice,” a prosecutor told an earlier sitting of Ballymena Magistrates Court.

Sentencing had been deferred from last year to now.
