Banned driver was on road because of ‘threat’

Ballymena Magistrates Court

A solicitor claimed a motorist caught driving while disqualified and being uninsured had received “threatening phone calls” and took to the road in fright when an individual arrived at his home.

Ayaz Khan (42), of Old Antrim Road, Ballymena, had the driving offences detected in May this year.

He had pleaded guilty to the charges.

The defendant had been given an original driving ban in February this year for driving without insurance.

That court was told the defendant had been abroad for three months and Khan claimed he had not realised his insurance had expired whilst he was away.

Back at the court this week, defence solicitor David McIlrath said that after the threats and the arrival of an individual, Khan had driven during the May offence.

The defendant was given 60 hours of unpaid work and banned from driving for a month.
