Car struck grass verge and then police discovered Easter Sunday drink driver

Ballymena Court

POLICE discovered a car had struck a grass verge at the Doury Road in Ballymena in the early hours of Easter Sunday and when they spoke to a man they saw walking towards the town centre they found he was over the limit.

Officers had found the man’s driving licence in the vehicle and when they talked to Edwin Murphy (54), a storeman, of Moat Road in Ballymena, he admitted he had been driving and said he crashed.

The defendant had an alcohol in blood reading of 147 with the legal limit being 80.

At Ballymena Magistrates Court he pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol in his blood, not displaying L plates and being an unaccompanied driver.

Defence barrister Stephen Law said the defendant had been driving for 15 years and had never sat his test but instead had driven with qualified drivers beside him.

The defendant was banned from driving for 14 months and fined £400.
