A BALLYMENA woman who admitted eight charges of stealing food from Tesco has been given an 18 months conditional discharge.
Denise Picken (37), with an address listed as Moat Road, took items on eight dates in May this year.
According to the charge sheet, the amounts involved ranged from £1.25 to £27.05 with the total amount being around £80.
The defendant appeared at Ballymena Magistrates Court on Thursday.
A prosecutor said the defendant had gone to a self-scan area and although she paid for some good she did not scan all the items.
Defence barrister Stephen Law said the incidents were “completely out of character” and happened at a time when the defendant – a mother – was “under extreme stress”.
He said the defendant wished to apologise and she was assessed as being a very low likelihood of re-offending.
