A MAN previously described in court as a “connoisseur of cannabis” has been given a three months jail term, suspended for 14 months, after again being caught with the Class B drug.
Jonathan David Edgar (22), whose address was given as Magheramenagh Drive in Portrush, was at Coleraine Magistrates Court on September 2 in connection with two charges of having cannabis on April 16 this year.
Defence barrister Thomas McKeever said the defendant has been engaging well with Probation in relation to earlier offences.
He said the defendant had a “long-standing drug addiction” stretching back to when he was 13.
The lawyer said the issue had been the defendant’s mental health but there had been stability recently and he was living with his parents and came from a “stable and loving family”.
Mr McKeever said Edgar did have a job in a coffee shop but his court bail conditions had impacted upon that.
District Judge Peter King said he was “delighted” that Probation seemed to be going well although he was “slightly concerned” that the defendant was not employed.
The defendant was in the dock with his arm in a sling.
