Court hears drink driver ‘will want to forget’ his 21st birthday

21ST BIRTHDAY celebrations turned sour when a man was caught behind the wheel drink-driving.

Cameron Niall Milligan, of Windsor Avenue, Limavady, appeared before Coleraine Magistrates Court.

The court heard how Milligan had been detected following a report of a possible drink-driver at McDonald’s Restaurant in Coleraine at 4.25am on Friday May 24 this year.

Police found the Peugeot vehicle at the forecourt of the nearby Moran’s Centra service station and when Milligan got out they could smell intoxicating liquor and he was “stumbling over his words”.

A breath test showed he was more than twice the legal limit with a reading of 84 – the legal limit being 35.

In his defence, the court was told that Milligan had been celebrating his 21st birthday which had fallen on May 22 when he had made “a very grave miscalculation” after stopping drinking late on May 23.

At 4am Milligan “foolishly” thought he was safe to drive but that was clearly not the case, the court heard.

The decision would have “very serious consequences” for the tree surgeon who was apologetic and had no previous convictions.

Imposing an 18-month driving ban and a £250 fine, District Judge Peter King told Milligan: “This is a 21st birthday you will want to forget.”
