Defence lawyer has received video in police helicopter laser case

A defence lawyer for a Ballymena man, who is charged in connection with an incident in which a laser pen was shone at a police helicopter as it hovered over the town, has now received video and statements from prosecutors.

Sheldon McClean (19), of Dunclug Gardens, faces two charges relating to March 3 this year.

The first charge reads that he ‘recklessly or negligently acted in a manner likely to endanger an aircraft or any person in an aircraft’.

The second charges reads that the defendant ‘directed or shone a light at an aircraft in flight so as to dazzle or distract the pilot of the aircraft’.

He was present at Ballymena Magistrates Court on Thursday.

The case was adjourned to the end of May.

On March 3 this year the PSNI Air Support twitter page said: ‘Police 46 were over Ballymena this evening when a male shone a laser at them.

‘Thanks to excellent work between Police 46 and @PSNIMEADistrict one male was arrested for a number of relevant offences and is currently in custody.’
