Drink driver claimed he lost control after vehicle hit ‘very bad manhole’

Ballymena Court

A RATHKENNY man with excess alcohol in his breath crashed a vehicle which was written off claimed he lost control after hitting a “very bad manhole”.

Jordan Williamson (20) of Cushendall Road, admitted driving with excess alcohol at Carnlough Road, Broughshane, on October 13 this year.

A defence lawyer told Ballymena Magistrates Court the defendant had driven to a pub on a Sunday afternoon and had two pints and after a lift let him down he drove home.

The court heard the defendant had ensured a wall which was damaged in the incident had been fixed.

Banning the defendant from driving for a year along with a £200 fine, District Judge Nigel Broderick said thankfully no other vehicles or pedestrians had been struck.

The judge said he had no doubt the defendant had learned a “salutary lesson”.
