Judge tells woman (24) alcohol was ‘no excuse’ for pre-Christmas trouble in Ballymena town centre

Ballymena Court

A JUDGE told a 24-year-old woman who pleaded guilty to being disorderly at Springwell Street in Ballymena in the early hours of Sunday December 1 last year that “alcohol is not an excuse”.

Anna O’Neill (24), of Dunvale in the town, also admitted assaulting three police officers and resisting one of the officers in the execution of his duty.

A prosecutor said following an argument the defendant was asked to move on but she returned and was shouting loudly and when arrested she lashed out at officers striking one on the face.

A defence solicitor said the defendant, a shop assistant, was “very embarrassed” by the incident.

At Ballymena Magistrates Court on Thursday, District Judge Nigel Broderick told the defendant he noted the clear record and he hoped it was her one and only appearance in court.

However he said her behaviour had been “totally unacceptable” and “alcohol is not an excuse”.
