Judge warns of dangers of drink driving after man crashes vehicle in early hours

Ballymena Court

A Portglenone drink driver crashed and severely damaged a Mercedes vehicle at the village’s Hiltonstown Road in the early hours of November 11 last year, Ballymena Magistrates Court heard on Thursday.

Alan Montgomery (29), with an address at Mansefield Heights, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol.

Police responded to a single vehicle collision and found the defendant had an alcohol in breath reading of 79 – the legal limit is 35.

The defendant’s DNA was found on an airbag.

A defence lawyer said the defendant who had a previously clear record has moved to Belfast so he can walk to work.

District Judge Nigel Broderick said aggravating features in the case were the “relatively high reading” and the collision.

Thankfully, the judge said, neither the defendant nor anyone else was injured but he said the incident showed just how dangerous drink driving is.

The defendant was banned from driving for 14 months and fined £300.
