Man charged with ‘serious’ offence was caught shoplifting shortly after being bailed to Ballymena

Ballymena Court

A MAN who is set to go on trial next year for a “serious offence” carried out a shoplifting raid in Ballymena a short time after being released from prison on bail.

Sean Ciaran Joseph Rodgers (32), whose address was given as no fixed abode in Ballymena, has admitted stealing 16 DVDs from Poundland and a VR headset from B&M Bargains on October 5 this year.

A prosecutor told Ballymena Magistrates Court on Thursday security staff tracked the defendant to a property at the town’s Galgorm Road following the thefts.

The defendant was arrested and all the items were recovered in his bedroom.

The court heard Rodgers had a record for dishonesty.

A defence solicitor said the thefts were committed a short time after the defendant was released on bail for a “more more serious offence” for which he is set to go on trial for next year.

The lawyer said Rodgers had shoplifted because he had no money and he intended to sell the stolen items on “in order to survive”.

The defendant was given a three months jail sentence.
