A MAN who stole items from what he thought was a random vehicle outside the Lighthouse hostel in Ballymena was said to have been “heartbroken” when he discovered the car belonging to a hostel staff member.
James Gordon (30), now with an address given as Newtownhamilton in County Armagh, was at Ballymena Magistrates Court on Thursday for sentencing for charges including theft of an Apple iPod, a USB stick, power cable and a sum of cash on December 5 last year.
He also admitted a theft of interfering with a vehicle at Linenhall Street in Ballymena.
A previous court heard he was under the influence of a “cocktail” of drink and drugs.
The earlier court heard the incident was captured on CCTV and the defendant made a full admission and all stolen items were returned.
A defence barrister previously said it was a “particularly mean-spirited offence” but that the defendant did not know the vehicle belonged to a Lighthouse hostel staff member.
Gordon had been under the influence of a “cocktail” of drugs and drink and had saw an opportunity to steal from a car, the lawyer said.
The case has been further adjourned.
