A man who punched his partner on the nose after a “row over a Chinese meal” has been given a suspended jail term.
William Daniel Allen (45), with an address listed as Woodvale Park in Bushmills, was at Coleraine Magistrates Court for sentencing on a charge of common assault.
A prosecutor said that around 9.30pm on Saturday March 16 this year received a 999 call that a woman had been assaulted by the defendant.
The injured party said she returned home and there was a dispute about a Chinese carry-out she had with her and during the incident the defendant punched her on the nose.
Allen was said to have been shouting in the back garden that he would back that night.
When interviewed the defendant told police he and the injured party had an argument about a Chinese meal for which he said he had given the money to buy.
He claimed he couldn’t recall deliberately striking the woman but said he may have put his hand up to stop himself being struck by items the woman was throwing into the garden.
District Judge Mark McGarrity said it was an offence of a “very serious nature” and imposed a four months jail term, suspended for three years; a three year Restraining Order and ordered the defendant to pay £200 compensation to the woman.
