Man put fist through car window in ‘random’ April Fool’s Day incident

Ciaran McKeown

A man put his fist through the window of a parked Mini Cooper car at 12.45am on April Fool’s Day this year in what a defence solicitor said was a “random” incident.

Ciaran McKeown (24), whose address was listed as no fixed abode in Ballymena, pleaded guilty to causing criminal damage.

A second charge of damaging a Nissan X Trail was withdrawn.

The defendant appeared at Ballymena Magistrates Court  via video link from Maghaberry Prison where he had been on remand since mid-May.

Defence solicitor John McAtamney said it was a random incident and the owner of the vehicle was unknown to the defendant.

District Judge Nigel Broderick said it appeared to have been a “random act of violence” which happened in the context of a very poor record and in breach of a suspended sentence.

The defendant was given a six months jail term.
