Man stole £26 jar of honey in Ballymena to use for ‘medicinal purposes’

Ballymena Court

A man stole a £26 jar of Manuka Honey from the Holland & Barrett shop in Ballymena to use “for medicinal purposes”.

Simon Nathan Montgomery (45), of Aboo Court in the Finaghy area of Belfast, committed theft on May 4 last year.

At Ballymena Magistrates Court on Thursday he admitted a charge of theft.

A defence solicitor said the circumstances were “quite unique” as the defendant was informed Manuka Honey had “medicinal” properties and he was using it to heal cuts.

The court heard Montgomery had a record and had previously been on a suspended sentence but is now “keeping himself on the straight and narrow”.

Deputy District Judge Brian Archer fined the defendant £75.
