Man who was drunk and verbally abusive at Tesco Express damaged display of cereal boxes

A man who was drunk and verbally abusive whilst at a Ballymena shop during the Christmas holidays damaged a display of cereal boxes and also lifted a fire extinguisher.

Mark Fenton (42), of Ballyloughan Avenue in Ballymena, also assaulted a security guard occasioning him actual bodily harm during the incident at the Tesco Express on the Ballymoney Road on December 30 last year.

Ballymena Magistrates Court, on Thursday, heard that when interviewed the defendant had no recollection of the incident.

The defendant, who had a previously clear record, admitted charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm; criminal damage to cereal boxes and disorderly behaviour.

Defence solicitor Archie McCormick said the defendant wished to “apologise profusely”.

District Judge Nigel Broderick said he was prepared to accept the incident was “out of character”.

The defendant was fined £250; had to pay the security guard compensation of £500 and also has to pay £114 compensation for damage caused.
