Man with ‘drug-induced psychosis’ grabbed partner by throat and stamped on mobile phone

Ballymena Court

A man who suffers from psychosis, allegedly “brought on” by the misuse of drugs, grabbed his partner by the throat and stamped on her mobile phone after she was on a late night phone call.

Steven William Richmond (28), with an address listed as Carniny Road in Ballymena, committed offences on May 9 this year.

He was at Ballymena Magistrates Court on Thursday for sentencing after previously admitting assault and criminal damage charges in relation to an incident in the Dunclug area where he had been drinking with his partner.

The court heard that during the midnight incident the defendant also “sat” on the woman and continued to grab her neck.

Defence solicitor David McIlrath said Richmond was on drugs since a young age.

The court was told the defendant had mental health issues including psychosis which appeared to be brought on by drugs but that Richmond’s mother has now secured him a rehab place.

District Judge Nigel Broderick imposed a two year restraining order but deferred sentencing for six months.
