A MAN claimed a handbrake was accidentally knocked off as he ate inside a Mercedes car causing it to strike a parked BMW at the car park near McDonald’s in Ballymena.

Ross Patrick Higgins (38), of Hillmount Road near Cullybackey, fled the area, Ballymena Magistrates Court was told.

He claimed he left after receiving “abuse” at the scene.

At court, where the defence solicitor was Stewart Ballentine, the defendant pleaded guilty to using a vehicle without insurance and failing to remain at the scene of a collision and also admitted a driving licence offence.

The court heard the defendant wished to apologise.

The defendant was banned from driving for six months and fined £300.
