Mother-of-five’s vehicle fraud offence was ‘moment of madness’ says defence lawyer

Ballymena Courthouse

A MUM of five who admitted fraud involving an amount of £8,000 from an insurance firm after falsely claiming a Nissan Pathfinder vehicle was stolen has been given a six months prison term, suspended for 18 months.

Joleen Arbuthnot (40), of Ballynulto Road, Glenwherry, was at Ballymena Magistrates Court on Thursday.

A defence lawyer said there was “no doubt it’s a bad case of dishonesty” but described it as a “moment of madness”.

After getting into “financial hardship” the lawyer said the defendant “came up with this ridiculous idea” but she had been “riddled with guilt” for the “out of character” offence.
