A solicitor for a Larne man who admitted speeding on the A8 coming into the town said the defendant failed to slow down in time where the limit changed from 60mph to 40mph.

The lawyer was speaking at Ballymena Magistrates Court where James Frank Dempsey (29), of Regents Park, was given three penalty points and a £75 fine.

The offence was detected on January 22 this year.

The defendant, who pleaded guilty to a charge of excess speed and wished to apologise, had originally been given a fixed penalty ticket in relation to the offence but mislaid it which triggered the court appearance.
